About the course
“Thank you for a fantastic day! I’ve learnt so much. The best professional course I have ever been on." Dr Rachael Hall, Alstom Power
Join professional engineer, physicist, and television scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock on this one day practical course to learn how to communicate effectively with clarity and passion. Delegates will be shown how to analyse and prepare their work for communication to different audiences; learn techniques for presenting in person and practice doing all this on camera.
“I want to show how to transfer your passion and knowledge to others and get yourself and your work out there. How can we have a knowledge–based economy if vast numbers of people are not being heard or seen in public life?”
Maggie is the presenter of the iconic BBC astronomy series “The Sky at Night”. She also led the Optical Instrumentation Group at Astrium, one of Europe’s leading space companies. She will be training delegates alongside award-winning science TV producers and presentation trainers, Screenhouse. Through the day delegates will have the chance to develop their own communication skills through practical exercises.
Courses are delivered for specific groups of women in STEM, including:
Corporate women in STEM: The aim is to inspire women in the corporate world to communicate their work, whether making an internal business case, pitching to clients, doing media interviews, or presenting to the board.
Women in STEM researchers: Learn how to communicate your research effectively with clarity and passion. Delegates will be shown how to analyse and prepare their work for communication to different audiences; learn techniques for communicating their research in person and maximising its impact.
Feedback from previous courses:
“I really enjoyed the day; the mixture between theory and practical activities was just right. I’ve learned a lot and feel more confident about my public presentations.”
“Excellent day – fitted lots in at an acceptable pace. Very productive and useful. Great energy from tutors. You need to do more work in academia. So many “high level” academics are very poor presenters and this is considered ok.”
“Good well run day. Good exercises and feedback.”
“It was challenging but valuable.”
“It’s extremely important to work with a role model like Maggie.”
“Everybody was very professional and knew their stuff.”
“Excellent with some great individual feedback which I will use a lot.”
“The chance to keep practising was great.”
“It was daunting being filmed but playback and presentation was useful.”
“Maggie is an inspirational role model. We need more like her.”
