Time for Action – What can organisations do to inspire women to pursue STEM careers?
Women who work in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) have good career prospects, interesting jobs,
higher than average pay and opportunities to travel. Yet, despite excellent role models who are
challenging the stereotypes, many bright and capable girls continue to avoid these jobs.
With a shortage of good engineers and scientists in the UK and high demand for employees with a STEM background, the time for talking is over; action is needed. On 13 November, a unique programme of daytime events will bring together all the relevant stakeholders and challenge leaders to make changes that will encourage more women into STEM.
The WISE Awards 2014 Daytime Event Programme, hosted by WISE in conjunction with headline sponsor Bloomberg, the global leader in business and financial information, news and analysis, will discuss why many girls avoid engineering, science and technology jobs and ultimately create an action plan for addressing the bias, often unintentional, in the workplace. The Event will take place at the prominent Southbank Centre, London.
A panel of high profile speakers from STEM and non-STEM organisations will challenge the role of women in STEM over the next 30 years. A series of workshops hosted by Royal Academy of Engineering, Atkins, AWE, Wellcome Trust and the Institution of Civil Engineers will propose topics such as ‘Forget graduates; apprentices are the future’; and ‘The Leaky pipeline: why so many female STEM students find employment in non-STEM jobs’.
The views and ambitions of young women will be heard with the inaugural meeting of the WISE Young Women’s Board, sponsored by Intel.
In the evening, the WISE Awards in association with Bloomberg celebrate the achievements of women and girls in STEM. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, patron of the WISE campaign, has once again been invited to present the WISE Awards at a prestigious dinner at the 5 star Grange Tower Bridge Hotel. These celebrations mark the 30th anniversary of the WISE Campaign promoting women in science, technology and engineering. Tickets for the Awards Ceremony include free entry to the daytime event.
