Who are Shadow Robot Company?

The Shadow Robot Company was founded in 1987 by a group of robotics enthusiasts in London. The group has since evolved into one of the longest running robotics companies in the UK, developing robotics technologies and using them to solve real world problems.

Shadow has delivered exciting engineering projects for clients with outstanding work in Mechanical, Electronic, Software and Pneumatic Engineering. Our collaborations range from working with multinationals such as Siemens, to working with both NASA and ESA (European Space Agency), as well as universities throughout the world. We are proud to have been involved with the award-winning TV programme 'How to Build a Bionic Man’ (‘The Incredible Bionic Man’ in the US) and the development of the ground-breaking Moley Robotic Kitchen.

Shadow is the leading developer of dexterous robotics manipulation technologies ('hands for robots') and brings expertise across the project development process, from working with partners to shape the proposal to embedded systems design, mechanical engineering, systems integration, hardware development, and application discovery. Shadow is currently applying robotic manipulation technologies to a range of areas, from research robot hands through to applications in manufacturing processes, logistics and agriculture.

What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women's recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are Shadow Robot Company involved in?

We had our eyes opened at the #9PercentIsNotEnough conference which has led to changes within our organisation. The language in our job ads is less masculine and more open and friendly. We’re also making sure our interview panels include at least one woman.

We use gender neutral language in all of our communication (why do people still insist on writing Dear Sirs when they don’t know who they're writing to?). We have family-friendly, flexible hours which allows our staff to take time for caring responsibilities. And we’ve encouraged staff to get individual membership to WISE too.

Why did Shadow Robot Company join WISE?

We joined WISE because we don’t like the disparity of gender in engineering. At the Shadow Robot Company, we are proud to work with such a wealth of inspirational colleagues and partners – which includes a list of brilliant women within the Shadow team and throughout the world of robotics.
