To mark International Women’s Day, the WISE Young Women’s Board chose to bring insights to others on what it’s like to be a woman working in STEM

2018 feels like an important year in the campaign for women’s rights. We celebrate 100 years since women in the UK were first awarded the right to vote, the prominent “#metoo” and “#timesup” movements against the sexual harassment of women have spread across social media, giving women a voice, and companies across the UK have been told that they must publish the difference between what they pay men and women by the 4^th April (check out the gender pay gaps here)

Whilst we are making improvements, there is still a long way to go. International Women’s Day marks a call to action, a day to recognise that we have to take collective action for driving gender parity and that there is, now more than ever, a need to #PressforProgress. The World Economic Forum's 2017 Global Gender Gap Report highlights that gender parity is over 200 years away. It’s been 100 years since we got the right to vote, and we still have to fight, advocate, march for another 200 for gender parity. Now is no time to slow down on the action for gender parity and it is everyone’s responsibility.

Focusing on women in technology, science, economics and maths, we’re still under represented, with this in mind on International Women's Day, we took to social media to share insights on what its like to be a woman working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We saw videos from a number of the Young Women’s Board members, highlighting why we choose to work in our fields, and why we need more women to join us (JOIN US!).
