My career started as an apprentice motor technician which required me to attend college once a week and night school twice a week. Having successfully gained my qualifications I worked for Ford Motor Company.

At the young age of 19, I married my wife Dawn and 35 happy years later have 2 children and a granddaughter.

In 1988 I joined GSK as a Process Technician within manufacturing, over the years several opportunities have allowed me to change direction culminating in my current role of Apprentice Programme Manager which involves managing Early Talent & Development.

Prior to this role I gained significant site experience as a Team Manager, Shift Manager & Process Manager alongside various project work which has proved invaluable when mentoring GSK apprentices.

Throughout my career at GSK I was also a retained fire fighter for 20 years serving as a crew manager in my local town of Ulverston.

Outside work I enjoy keeping fit by going to the gym and have previously completed a sub 3 hour London Marathon, I spend most Saturday’s following my local football team Barrow AFC.

My biggest challenge has been re-introducing apprentices back into GSK after many years of them being absent from the Pharma Industry and GSK.

To support this I actively engage with external agencies & schools promoting careers to young people through our STEM programme and demonstrating the importance of growing your own talent to build a sustainable workforce.

The highlight for me was this year when a team of 9 Ulverston GSK apprentices were crowned as UK apprentice team of the year. I had the privilege of mentoring them throughout and, not only has this been a great advert for apprenticeships but also females in industry. By sharing successes we encourage others to consider apprenticeships in the Science Industry.
