Finalist for the 2017 WISE Talent Award
25 September 2017
Laurianne Griffiths (above) I am the Global Apprentice Programme Lead for GSK’s manufacturing division. When I launched the GSK Apprenticeship programme in 2011, there were 11 apprentices. There are now over 250 apprentices at any one time on 13 different STEM discipline apprenticeships across the UK, Singapore, US, Ireland and Europe– a vast majority of whom go on to land permanent positions with GSK. I am extremely proud that the programme and our apprentices have been recognized both regionally and nationally for the difference they make at work and through their STEM and charity work. These include Anna Shaw WISE Apprentice, GSK President’s award 2016 and UK National Apprentice team 2017.
I am a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, with a PGC in Design, Manufacture and Management (ACDMM) from Cambridge University and a BSc in Engineering from Durham University. Enabled by my engineering background, I have had a fantastic multi-faceted career. The majority of my roles have been in engineering and manufacturing operations in the chemical (ICI), food (Heinz & Cadbury Schweppes) and pharmaceutical (GSK) industries. I have worked as a business writer (Accenture) during my maternity break (I have 3 boys!) and have more recently worked in energy & sustainability and HR. I am on the Industrial Cadets (EDT) national steering committee and represented GSK as part of the Royal Academy of Engineering Diversity Leadership group.
My own determination to become an engineer was cemented by a WISE course at Portsmouth University - and my passion has continued; encouraging young people (and particularly young women) to see how exciting, challenging and rewarding a career in Engineering and Science can be!
