Further Achievement for Phebe, a Woman of Outstanding Achievement

​Chartered Civil Engineer and 2011 WISE Woman of Outstanding Achievement winner, Dr Phebe Mann, honoured with photo portrait at The David Hockney Building, Bradford College.

The photographic portrait was unveiled at the WISE Women in Science and Engineering event at Bradford College, on 29 November 2016. The portrait which was originally awarded to Dr Mann for winning the 2011 WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement (WoOA), Tomorrow's Leader Award, now sits permanently next to the sculpture of Nobel Prize winner, Sir Edward Appleton.

The unveiling was part of a day long WISE event which included workshops and lectures, celebrating and promoting women in STEM.

At the unveiling of the portrait, Phebe said: "It is my great pleasure, to be associated with Bradford College. I am really privileged to have my portrait to be permanently located adjacent to Sir Edward Appleton'ssculpture."

Anita Lall, Assistant Principal (Academic and Sixth Form) at Bradford College, said: "Phebe is an outstanding engineer, an innovative teacher and a potent role model and is passionate about inspiring women into careers in science and engineering. I am sure that the portrait will act as an inspirational reminder to female students that they too can succeed in this field."

Phebe continues to lead the way in encouraging women to consider, and be considered for, roles in STEM and for her achievements, Dr Mann is recognised as a true pioneer. As a Chartered Civil Engineer, Chartered Surveyor, Chartered Builder, Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a European Engineer she is currently the only woman in the UK to hold six professional engineering qualifications concurrently.

She said: "My message to young women today is: I would encourage all of you, to strive for excellence! If you are passionate about Science and Engineering, discover your potentials, seek opportunities, equip yourself, develop a positive learning attitude and determine to be successful! Don’t be discouraged by failures! Every success is built on many failures; don’t give up if you believe in yourself!"

Following her science and engineering degrees, Phebe worked for Westminster City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and Atkins before becoming a university lecturer. During her impressive career, Phebe researched and designed many highway bridges including those along the A11 Stump Cross to Four Went Ways, the A1(M) Alconbury to Peterborough and Little Venice Canal Wall at Westminster. She is a former programme director at the University of Reading, associate lecturer at The Open University, Quality Standard Advisor of University College of Estate Management, and she is currently senior lecturer in civil engineering, highway and transportation, and construction law at the University of East London.
