Winner of the WISE Rising Star Award

27 October 2016

Amy Hart, Apprentice Software Developer, HMRC, Aged 20

Amy wasn’t keen on STEM subjects at school but later in the college library, searching for jobs, she came across the Civil Service Fast Track apprenticeship in IT, which described an opportunity that would have a significant impact on projects that affect the entire nation. This was enough for her to take the leap into STEM, knowing that hard work and dedication would be required, but the rewards would be worth it. Amy now works for HMRC Digital delivering national insurance and state pension services. With only two years in software development, her code contributions have been a great achievement and functionality that she has programmed, is being used by over 500,000 customers. Amy has a passion and ambition to inspire others to consider STEM careers and has worked alongside 3000 young people and teachers because she doesn’t want other women and girls to assume there isn’t a place for them here, like she did. “Do not underestimate the power of a reassuring smile and some words of empowerment. In my opinion, nothing is scarier than being alone. If I could follow a crowd for the rest of my life, I would, it’s the easy option. But I can’t. I needed to be stronger than my fears so that I could succeed in STEM.”

Amy's People Like Me types: Policy Maker, Trainer, Regulator and Service Provider

Judges comments: Our winner fell into a demanding STEM career without realising it and found it so rewarding she has gone on to inspire over 1000 young people already. We look forward to seeing what she does next!
