WISE Knowledge Sharing Event at Winton Capital

The Challenge & Future of Big Data

Winton hosted a well-attended knowledge sharing event at their Grove House auditorium with the theme of Big Data: The Future & The Challenges. 

Over 40 people took the opportunity to hear 3 great speakers talking about Big Data from their various different perspectives. Professor David Hand, the Chief Scientific Advisor to Winton Capital Management, helped separate the reality from the hype in big data and talked about where it is really making a difference rather than just being the latest ‘buzz words’. Prof Hand is an Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College, another WISE corporate member. Dr Valerie Livinia from the National Physical Laboratory, also a WISE corporate member, followed on to talk about novel inferential challenges and opportunities arising from large series data sets. She had some fascinating examples from geophysical examples. Bloomberg then stood in at the last minute to finish with an in depth presentation about search engines and how to make sure that we can extract the useful data. 

Thank you to all 3 speakers as well as hosts Winton Capital for the use of their impeccable venue and for the food and drink provided afterwards during a time of networking. This knowledge sharing event was a little different from the usual WISE events with a much more technical bias which many said they benefited from.
