Eleanor 'Elly' Davies

Electrician and business owner of 'Elle Electrical'

Elly Davies was born in Luton and moved to Swansea when she was seven. She left Bishopstone Comprehensive after her GCSEs and went to work for an amusement company.

One of her uncles ran his own electrical firm and Elly wanted to emulate his success. She explains: “I saw how well he’d done working in this industry and it seemed like the perfect career for me. I thought there would be loads of people who would want to employ a female electrician and that I could set up my own business quite quickly.”

During her four year apprenticeship Elly studied at Neath Port Talbot College, and worked for M and M Electrical. “It was a brilliant experience,” she says. “The classroom atmosphere was really supportive and I quickly got used to the banter there and on-site.”

Elly finished her apprenticeship and set up her business, Elle Electrical, in October 2012 at the tender age of 23. Since then she hasn’t looked back. “Business is great and I’m really busy. In fact, I’m looking to take on a couple of apprentices of my own soon, as I’ve got so much work on and I’m trying to combine running my business with studying for a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.” she says.

So what would Elly say to a young girl who’s thinking about training as an apprentice? “It’s a tremendous opportunity there to do a lot of interesting work, but you need to be determined as it’s not an easy ride. You also need to be able to hold your own when it comes to bantering with the lads, but it’s a great experience! I’d tell anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship to go for it – you won’t regret it!”

Elly is a JTL Apprentice Ambassador, part of a nationwide programme which is being delivered by training charity JTL. The Apprentice Ambassador Initiative aims to encourage more young women to enter apprenticeship in the craft sector.
