Bradford social housing group wins national diversity award

Bradford social housing provider Incommunities Group Ltd has been recognised for its commitment to workplace diversity.

Incommunities Group Ltd was presented with the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Diversity award at a glittering award ceremony at the Science Museum, London, last night (Nov 14) by HRH The Princess Royal.

Sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology the Diversity award was given in recognition for the firm’s commitment to building a skilled workforce which reflects the communities in which they work.

Incommunities encourages female apprentices to act as ambassadors, raising awareness of the opportunities in construction and showing through their own experience how this can be a positive career choice for women and people from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds.

Partnership working has been critical to their success. The results are impressive: of 560 applicants to the 2012 Apprenticeship programme 25 per cent were from minority ethnic backgrounds and five per cent female.

Delroy Beverley, chief executive of the property side of the business, says it is now normal to see female trades people working on their sites: “Our programme and work is something we are very proud of and is a real example to other organisations of just what can be achieved”.

After receiving the award from HRH The Princess Royal, Sue Laycock, Director for Human Resources, said “It is important for Bradford to be representative of the community in which we work. We strive to have women and people from minority ethnic backgrounds across our workforce - by doing so we can provide a better service to our communities and our people.”
