Responses from Government to the 10 point plan - From the 2014 launch

“I am delighted to see this 10 point plan for sustaining female talent in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) workforce, Despite the UK’s long and distinguished history in scientific technological endeavours, we have further to go when it comes to making sure that we benefit from the fullest participation by women in some STEM disciplines. We must pull out all the stops to ensure that women are not overlooked at work and that they are confident in applying for jobs in this vital area. This is not just a matter of fairness, but a business imperative. Science and technology are driving our economic recovery and if we are going to maintain the UK’s exemplary success then we must draw from our full talent pool. I hope that STEM employers of all sizes will adopt this 10 point plan, act on its recommendation and help make a difference.” David Cameron, The Prime Minister

“Thank you for sending a copy of your letter dated 24 September 2014 to me and Jo Swinson MP, informing us about the roadmap you have developed for STEM employers to sustain female talent in STEM. As you have said, the STEM workforce is vital to growth and we are committed to increasing the number of women in STEM careers. We are both very pleased that the Royal Academy of Engineering and WISE, along with co-signatories, have taken this positive step to retain and develop female talent. We will certainly continue to encourage industry leaders to improve diversity in their organisations and we will highlight the roadmap you have developed as a means to do that.” The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Minister for Women and Equalities

“The 10 Steps is an important move towards advancing diversity in the science and engineering professions. I would like to congratulate the WISE Campaign, the Royal Academy of Engineering, industry members and partners and look forward to following the progress of this fantastic new industry campaign. My personal commitment is to ensure that 30% of energy company executive board members are female. Earlier this year I launched POWERful Women – an initiative which will endeavor to make this goal a reality.” Baroness Verma, Minister for Energy and Climate Change
