Who are The Co-op?
We’re one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, owned by millions of members. We’re the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer with more than 2,500 local, convenience and medium-sized stores.
- the UK’s number 1 funeral services provider
- a major general insurer
- a growing legal services business
And, we have a minority shareholding in The Co-operative Bank.
As well as having clear financial and operational objectives and employing nearly 70,000 people, we’re a recognised leader for our social goals and community-led programmes. We exist to meet members’ needs and stand up for the things they believe in.
What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women's recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are The Co-op involved in?
We’re sponsors of Liverpool Girl Geeks, a social enterprise that’s a mission to help close the gender gap in tech by creating positive interventions like events, courses and workshops to inspire women and girls of all ages, as well as celebrate and showcase role models within the tech sector.
The Co-op’s Aspire network has for 5 years now been supporting both female and male colleagues who want to be pro-active and take the reins in furthering their personal and career development. Aspire is fully inclusive, but its focus is on women as we know that women are significantly under-represented in senior management and leadership roles in the UK.
Why did The Co-op join WISE?
Joining WISE seemed like a natural step as our tech community is growing fast, and it’s vital that our teams are as diverse and inclusive as possible. The campaign is very much aligned to our core values of equality and fairness, and it’ll help us fulfil our commitment to communities by engaging and inspiring girls in schools across the UK.
