Who are UTC Reading?

UTC Reading is a University Technical College that delivers computer science and engineering excellence for 14-19 year olds. We aim to educate and train the next generation of technicians, engineers and industrial innovators.

Our vision is for our students to be inspired by the relevance and challenge of solving real-life industrial and community problems. They will rapidly gain the confidence and both the technical and personal skills to become the creative contributors on whom our businesses and public services can rely for shaping and driving the future of our society.

Every student and member of staff is encouraged and expected to continuously strive for improvement, setting themselves goals that are both personally challenging and constructive for the community as a whole. In a climate of mutual support and respect, individuals gain the motivation to work with initiative and independence and also the self-confidence to ask questions and to seek the help of others.

UTC Reading is a very special place created through a partnership between industry and education. Our new approach to the curriculum, grounded in traditional values, provide a great foundation for our students’ future. We are confident that students who attend UTC Reading will be given the best start with a variety of progression routes into employment and further or higher education.

What projects / schemes / initiatives to support women's recruitment, retention and progression in STEM are UTC Reading involved in?

UTC Reading joined WISE to support the national issue that there are simply not enough women in STEM subjects. As a college specialising in Computer Science and Engineering, it is vital that we bridge the gap and can provide an essential workforce of women into these fields. We run a STEM hub; a monthly action group where industry partners and schools from the local community meet to book up STEM activities and events with the explicit intention of encouraging young females into STEM careers. We also run a number of employer led enrichment activities with primary schools, serving the same purpose. By joining WISE, they will be able to support us on these efforts, help to spread the word, and provide us with authoritative research and an extended network that we can rely on to further our efforts. Within three years we aim to have females making up 50% of our cohort and WISE will be instrumental in helping us achieve this goal.

Why did UTC Reading join WISE?

Stephanie Mitchell – Director of Industry Relations Having been passionate about creativity, design and engineering from a young age, I am inspired to share my positive experiences as a female in this sector; I am very keen to dispel the myth that engineering is a male profession.
