The Space Research Centre (SRC) at the University of Leicester conducts world leading research and instrumentation development to advance knowledge for the public good. The centre’s capability is proven through its portfolio of space missions and application of this knowledge to ground based technologies. For over 50 years, instruments built by the SRC have been successfully operating in space and this success is expected to continue into the future. To achieve this, the SRC works closely with major space organisations like NASA and the European Space Agency and has an internal engineering team tasked with taking scientific instruments from initial concept to the launch site and into operation.

Leicester is responsible for delivering the Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) which will be launched on the forthcoming ESA-CAS SMILE mission to study the earth’s magnetosphere. You will Project Manage the activities of the International Instrument Project Team towards the successful delivery of the SXI instrument.

With guidance from the SXI Principal Investigator, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of the project plan. You will manage project schedules and ensure the delivery of objectives at key milestones. You will manage the activities of the SXI project teams (locally and internationally), interface with international collaborators, monitor and manage budgets and provide financial and business reporting.

We are looking for a self-starter who has previous experiencing of managing scientific projects. You will use your initiative to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

SMILE will be launched at the end of 2021 and is currently at an early stage of development. The Project Manager post therefore offers an exciting opportunity for a dynamic person to make a significant impact on a space mission.
